What this solves
The National Archaeological Museum (Ethniki Archaiologiki) has 5 main collections spread across the ground and first floors: Mycenaean, Cycladic, Geometric, Classical Sculpture, and the Antikythera Mechanism room. Most tourists wander aimlessly and miss the Antikythera or the Poseidon of Artemision. This tool gives you a specific room sequence that hits the must-sees within your time budget.
Calculator
How to read the result
The output is a numbered room sequence with the minutes to spend in each and the must-see highlights. The route is built around the museum's two-story layout — start on the ground floor (Mycenaean / Cycladic), move upstairs (sculpture), and finish with the Antikythera Mechanism if you have time.
If your time is less than the minimum needed for your chosen route, the calculator flags this and suggests a tighter cut (e.g. drop the Cycladic gallery, or skip the Egyptian collection).
Limitations
- The NAM regularly rotates exhibits — the Antikythera Mechanism room occasionally closes for maintenance. Verify on the official site before visiting.
- Time estimates assume you don't read every plaque. With detailed reading, a 90-min route becomes 2.5 hours.
- The museum has a temporary exhibition space (rotating); this calculator doesn't model that.
- The Mask of Agamemnon is in the Mycenaean gallery, ground floor. Some visitors go to the wrong room — follow the route, not just the gallery name.
FAQ
Is the audio guide worth €10?
For Mycenaean and Cycladic galleries — yes, the official audio guide is informative. For Classical Sculpture, the on-site labels are sufficient. For the Antikythera Mechanism, the official video in the room is more informative than any audio guide.
Is the Antikythera Mechanism really a single ancient computer?
Yes. A bronze geared device recovered from a 1st-century BC shipwreck, used to predict astronomical positions and eclipse dates. The 2021 research confirmed it could track the four-year Olympiad cycle. It's the most impressive single object in the museum.
Is the museum air-conditioned?
Yes — and important to know for Athens summer visits. The NAM is one of the few Athens sites with reliable A/C. This makes it a good midday break during a July/August trip.

About this tool
Built because the NAM is the most underrated Athens attraction. With 11,000+ objects on display, walking in without a plan means missing the Antikythera and Poseidon. Not affiliated with the museum or the Ministry of Culture.
