What this solves
The taxi flat-fare law (€38 day / €54 night for the airport-city run) is the single most misquoted price on the Athens travel-internet. The metro is the cheapest single option but takes 90+ min with luggage. The X95 bus is cheapest but slowest. Best option depends on your time, group size, and luggage — this calculator gives the right answer for each scenario.

How to read the result
Three cards: cheapest, fastest, best with luggage. The "best with luggage" weighs speed vs pain — the metro is fine with one bag, painful with three, and genuinely impossible with a stroller and 4 suitcases at rush hour. The taxi flat-fare almost always wins on comfort for groups of 2+; the math is closer than travel blogs suggest.
Limitations
- The taxi flat-fare is the regulated airport-taxi rate to / from central Athens (within city boundary). For Piraeus or suburbs, the meter applies; the rate may differ.
- Beat and Uber don't always show drivers at the airport — pickup is at the designated airport pickup area, not the taxi queue. Surge pricing can double the meter rate.
- Metro Line 3 runs every 30 min from 05:30 to 21:30, then every 50 min. With 2-3 bags, the stairs at Syntagma transfer can be brutal.
- The X95 bus is a one-seat ride to Syntagma; luggage racks at the rear of the bus. Stops are sparse in the city.
FAQ
Is the €38 taxi fare real?
Yes — it's the legal flat-rate fare from Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) to anywhere within the city boundary. Night fare (00:00–05:00) is €54. Tolls are extra (€2.80 for the Attiki Odos motorway, often included). Tip €2-3.
Where do I catch the metro?
Level 1 of the airport terminal, near the arrivals exit. Trains run to Syntagma (30 min), Monastiraki (35 min), and Piraeus (45-50 min via Syntagma transfer to Line 1). The metro ticket is €9 (single + airport surcharge).
Is Uber legal in Greece?
Uber does not operate in Athens in the standard sense. Beat is the local ride-hail app and is widely used. Both app-based rides are subject to surge and may be cheaper or more expensive than a flat-fare taxi depending on demand.

About this tool
Built because the Athens taxi flat-fare is the most misreported price in the city. Drivers occasionally refuse it (technically illegal but happens), and travellers over-tip or under-pay. The calculator gives the honest answer for each scenario.
