Greece VAT Refund Calculator

What you actually get back from the 24% Greek VAT — minus Premier Tax Free fees, minus processing fees, minus the airport custom window that may be closed. The realistic net is ~10–12% of pre-tax spend, NOT the headline 24%.

What this solves

The headline "24% VAT refund" is technically true but practically misleading. The refund company (Premier Tax Free, Planet or Global Blue, etc.) charges a fee per form (€2–5), takes a commission on the refund they pay you, and the airport customs validation takes 30–45 minutes at Athens. The result: you walk in expecting €60 back on a €250 purchase, you leave with €28 in hand after Premier's commission and the card-processing fee. This calculator shows the realistic number per VAT tier.

How to read the result

The calculator outputs three numbers: the headline VAT amount (pre-tax × VAT rate), the operator's commission (typically 25–35% of the VAT), the per-form fee, and the net refund after both. The realistic net is around 10–12% of pre-tax spend for the standard 24% rate. For the reduced 13% rate (food/hotel), it's ~6%. The super-reduced 6% is rarely worth bothering with for small purchases because the per-form fee eats most of it.

The airport note is the part most first-time visitors skip. Athens (ATH) has the customs window open for most flights but the queue can be 30–60 minutes. Heraklion (HER), Chania (CHQ), and the islands have limited hours — sometimes only 4 hours a day. If your flight is outside those hours, you can sometimes validate at the next airport in your itinerary (e.g. Athens if connecting) but the rules are strict.

FAQ

Is it worth bothering for a small purchase?

Below ~€175 pre-tax at the 24% rate, the operator's per-form fee (€2–5) eats most of the refund. Below €50 it doesn't qualify at all. Above €175 it's meaningful. Above €400 it's worth queuing at the customs window.

Why is the refund net only 9–14% of pre-tax and not 24%?

Three things cut into it: the merchant discount (the shop keeps ~5% of the original VAT), the operator's commission on the refund they pay you (typically 25–35% of the VAT), and the per-form processing fee (€2–5). On a €100 pre-tax standard purchase the VAT is €24, but your actual refund is €10–14 after all three deductions.

Can I validate forms digitally?

Increasingly yes — Premier Tax Free and Planet both have apps that allow digital validation at some airports. The customs physical stamp is still required in many cases but the queue may be shorter for digital submissions. Check the operator's app before flying.

Can I get a refund when leaving by ferry?

Generally no for non-EU residents leaving Greece. The refund requires departure from an EU customs point to a non-EU country, validated by physical customs stamp. Ferry departures to Turkey or Albania may have customs windows but the rules are stricter. Plan your big purchases for the airport-leg of your trip.
