What this solves
The famous Greek beaches look identical on Instagram, but the experience differs wildly. Navagio requires a 30-minute boat ride and the actual swim spot is small. Balos lagoon requires a 1-hour hike down (or a beach boat). Elafonissi is drive-and-walk, no boat. Egremni in Lefkada was damaged in the 2015 earthquake and access is restricted. This tool gives you the realistic plan for each.

How to read the result
Each beach has a different signature — photogenic vs swimmable vs family-friendly vs quiet. The "best photo spot" usually requires the most access effort. The calculator weighs the access logistics against your vibe and crowd tolerance. The Instagram flag is explicit: every beach here has one, but the effort to reach the photo angle varies from 0 minutes (Elafonissi) to 60+ minutes (Balos hike).
Limitations
- Egremni in Lefkada was severely damaged in the 2015 earthquake. Access is via a long stair descent (~350 steps) and the beach is sometimes closed for rockfall risk. Verify status before going.
- Navagio beach (Zakynthos) has had cliff-collapse warnings; swimming close to the cliff face is sometimes prohibited in peak summer. The beach itself is open; the swim area is restricted.
- Balos lagoon can have very strong currents when the wind picks up. The shallow lagoon is safe; the channel between lagoon and open sea is not.
- Elafonissi parking fills by 10am in July/August. If you're driving, arrive before 9am or after 4pm.
FAQ
Is Balos reachable without a hike?
Yes — by boat from Kissamos. The beach boat (€45–65) drops you directly at the lagoon and returns mid-afternoon. The alternative is the 1-hour hike from the road (steep, rocky, no shade). Most visitors with kids take the boat.
Is Navagio crowded?
Yes — from late morning onward. The cove is small (a few hundred metres of beach) and boats arrive continuously. Arrive before 10am (first boat from Porto Vromi) or after 4pm for a quieter experience. The view from the cliff-top viewpoint (free, no boat) is iconic and uncrowded.
Can I drive to Myrtos?
Yes — there's a parking area above the beach and a steep winding road down (~300 steps or a short switchback path). The beach itself is pebbly and the water is deep and clear. Kefalonia's most photographed beach.
Which beach is best for kids?
Elafonissi is the clear winner — shallow lagoon, walkable sandbar, lifeguards in peak season, drive-up access with a flat walk. Balos lagoon is good but requires the boat or hike. Navagio and Egremni have no facilities and access is harder.

About this tool
Built because the Instagram photo of Navagio / Balos / Elafonissi doesn't tell you about the 1-hour hike, the cliff-collapse warning, or the boat timing. We compare access, vibe, and crowd reality. Reference data for 2025–2026.
