Santorini Volcano & Hot Springs

What the Nea Kameni climb and the Palea Kameni hot springs actually are. The hot springs are lukewarm, not hot. You swim in. The water is orange from iron. Tour prices 2025/2026 by option.

What this solves

The "volcano tour" in Santorini has two distinct parts that most trip-blog photos conflate: (1) the climb up the cinder cone of Nea Kameni — 30 minutes up a loose-gravel path, viewing 4–5 craters and smelling sulphur, then 30 minutes back down; and (2) the Palea Kameni hot springs swim-in — the boat drops anchor ~20m from the springs and you swim in; the water is lukewarm (not hot), orange from iron, and stains swimwear. Most tours bundle both, but the order, the price, and the physical effort vary widely. This calculator tells you which option matches your day.

Calculator

How to read the result

The calculator outputs three things: (a) the realistic price in EUR per person (or per boat for private), (b) the actual experience (what's included, how long, what's NOT included that the brochure glossed), and (c) the physical effort honest assessment. Most "volcano tour" photos show the dramatic Oia sunset; the reality is a 60-minute moderate climb, a 20-minute lukewarm orange swim, and then a sunset at Oia if you picked the sunset option.

The "hot springs" are the unique angle. The water is not hot — it's lukewarm (~30°C, 86°F), and orange from iron and sulphur minerals. You swim from the boat to the springs and back. The swim takes 5–10 minutes, the springs are smelly and your swimwear will stain orange. Bring an old swimsuit and a dark towel. Don't wear white.

Limitations

FAQ

Are the hot springs actually hot?

No — they're lukewarm (~30°C), more like a tepid bath than a hot spring. The orange colour comes from iron and sulphur minerals. The smell is strong sulphur. The water stains fabric, so bring a dark-coloured old swimsuit and a dark towel.

Is the Nea Kameni climb hard?

Moderate. 30 minutes up a loose-gravel path on a cinder cone, no shade, ~120m elevation gain. Steady but doable for most visitors in summer. Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended; flip-flops are a mistake. There's a €3–5 entry fee to the volcano reserve that most operators include but don't highlight.

Is the sunset option worth the extra cost?

It's a different experience — most "sunset combined" tours skip the climb and just do the springs plus a slow boat ride under the caldera cliffs at sunset. The Oia sunset from a boat is beautiful, but you miss the dramatic village viewpoint. If your trip has limited Oia sunset time, the combined tour is a substitute.

What about the "hiking instead" option?

The Fira → Oia hike is a separate experience — it doesn't go to the volcano at all. It's a 10km cliff-top walk with caldera views. If you want to see the volcano and the springs, take the boat tour; if you want the caldera-view cliff walk, do the hike instead. They are not interchangeable.
