What this solves
"Greek cooking class" covers everything from a 2-hour cruise-ship demo (you watch, they cook) to a 4-hour village hands-on (you make moussaka from scratch, eat what you cook). This calculator compares the options by what you actually learn and what you actually pay, including transport to the venue and what food/wine is included.
Calculator
How to read the result
The calculator ranks four class archetypes and tells you which one wins for your inputs. The "you actually learn" column is the part most blogs skip — a cruise-ship demo is a show, a village hands-on is a working session. Cost includes transport and any included wine/food; check what's in the price before booking.
Limitations
- Airbnb Experiences quality is highly variable — same listing can be "10-person chaos" or "3-person workshop." Read recent reviews carefully.
- Cruise-ship demos are scheduled by the cruise line and may not align with your port times.
- Private chef at villa assumes you have a villa; otherwise you're paying for a chef to come to your hotel (which many refuse).
- "Taverna secrets" classes are rare and book out fast — Selene, Brita's in Santorini and a handful of Athens venues offer them.
FAQ
Are village cooking classes worth the extra time?
Yes — for hands-on learning, the village format is unmatched. You visit the market, prep, cook, eat, and take home the recipe. The trade-off is 4–6 hours and usually transport from a major town. Worth it if cooking is the goal.
Should I tip the chef/instructor?
Yes, for the village and Airbnb formats, €10–€20 per person is appropriate. The private chef is usually tipped as part of the contract. Cruise demos are not tip-driven.
Is moussaka a good beginner dish?
It's iconic but labour-intensive (multiple components, 2+ hour bake). Better beginner dishes: Greek salad, gemista (stuffed veg), pastitsada. If you want moussaka, plan a half-day class.
Can vegetarians do these classes?
Most classes offer a vegetarian menu on request — Greek cuisine has deep vegetarian roots (fakorizo, briam, gemista, hortopita). Confirm when booking; not all chefs adapt the menu for veg.
